Why should I take classes at NextStage?
Currently there are few opportunities in Santa Cruz County for older adults to participate in the performing arts. Several senior centers have programs, but are limited in scope and frequency. Some classes in performance arts have been previously available at the local community college, but due to administrative changes regarding repeatability those opportunities no longer exist. There is no other organization in the county offering a training program, an environment in which to develop expertise, and a supportive surrounding for aspiring thespians to reach a dream goal. Now NextStage is providing this opportunity.
Why would I want to volunteer for NextStage?
Here are some reasons:
- Learn a new skill or just have fun
- Train in a performing arts discipline
- Perform with our outreach group
- Have a sense of accomplishment
- Make new friends with like minded individuals
- Join a worthy community service
Why was NextStage established?
The “Age Wave” is upon us and the “new age senior” is vital, healthier and interested in art and culture. NextStage is an inspirational influence in the Santa Cruz community, with all of its creative and entertaining offerings, which are open to be enjoyed by anyone regardless of color, creed or religion, with no discrimination on the basis of disabilities. In our collaboration with Cabrillo Extension, Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Department, Cabrillo Stage, NextStage offers a spectrum of professionally taught classes designed for life-long learners aged 50+. It is set in a safe and encouraging environment, where artists and student artists hone their skills while enjoying the companionship of others with a similar focus. We encourage our student to explore how the creative process promotes health, lifelong learning and an empowering sense of mastery in the theatrical disciplines they wish to study.
What are students saying about the NextStage program?
"My husband Dave took the musical theatre singing classes and I took the Storytelling and Improv Acting classes. The instructors were so professional. They shared their journeys and led us slowly and with care to a new place. Dave and I felt like we had come home. We realized that “sometime” later was now and Stagebridge was the platform that allowed us this new feeling. The outstanding instructors taught us to “play” again and enter into a place of laughter and silliness reminding us of our child-like curiosity. Nothing was left to chance concerning the organization of the classes. NextStage had every aspect of the experience covered. After checking in and receiving our materials, we were welcomed with smiles and words of encouragement. NextStage has opened their arms wide to the Senior Community and is changing attitudes towards aging by supporting 50+ by offering fun, exciting performance opportunities." -Nancy Maley, Student of Summer Program 2013
What is average age of the students taking NextStage classes?

With the Stagebridge Experience indoctrination for the last two years, Stagebridge Santa Cruz has stepped up and out from the mother lode to become Next Stage Productions to continue the life changing programs of Stagebridge with the addition of a vibrant program on its own, under the sponsorship of the Arts Council of Santa Cruz County.
