Expressive Arts Education

NextStage Productions endeavors to provide educational and performance opportunities to seniors that will enrich individual lives as well as the lives of those in the community. We believe that acquiring knowledge and sharing with others enhances self-esteem and gives purpose to those in the senior age demographic. Our classes are scheduled to build skills by offering sequential courses or by pairing so that students may take classes that cross pollinate in teaching ideas. For example, we have successfully paired Broadway dance with Musical Theater and also voice study with Alexander Technique.

Every summer, the collaboration of NextStage Productions, Cabrillo Extension, Cabrillo Stage, and Cabrillo Theatre Arts Department offers a spectrum of professionally taught classes designed for life-long learners aged 50+. Set in a safe and encouraging environment, artists and student artists home their skills while enjoying the companionship of others with a similar focus. Explore how the creative process promotes health, lifelong learning and an empowering sense of mastery in the theatrical disciplines one wishes to study.

CLASS STRUCTURE

When structuring classes and events, we follow the yearly schedule:

  • Informational and social meetings July/August
  • 8 week courses September-November
  • 1-2 day weekend workshops February/March
  • 8 week courses April-May
  • 6 day Cabrillo Extension Workshops - June

Classes are generally held once a week for 1.5 hours. The longer classes have a student showcase performance at the end as does the Musical Theater/Dance class in the Summer Camp. At times when classes are not scheduled, we take time to plan and evaluate and when possible adding outreach performances.

SOCIAL BENEFITS

NextStage Productions understands that performing/creative arts have a social component and with that knowledge, we program social events that utilize our creative and performing abilities but with the intent of providing a social, community outreach function. Flash-Mob performances in open performance venues, street performances and trips to area Arts performances are scheduled.
